Our well-known authority on Elton, Claude Bernardin, and a former editor of an Elton fan magazine, Tom Stanton, wrote the book, edited by Greenwood Press (1995). First cover of the book, Isbn - 0313297002, is now hard to find in mint: "This Cover shot is from a Photograph by Nannette Perrine-Bac, who takes wonderful Photo's of Elton John and Other Musicians" explains Bernardin. "I loved researching Rock Music. Still all because I was a fan. When the book came out I was thrust into this", he added. "I am “just” a fan. I love Elton’s music. I can sing every song. Know them forward, know them backward. I love to talk about his Music. I can joke about it, I can be critical. I enjoy that as well" says Bernardin.

"The book "Rocket Man" came to be after I saw a manuscript Claude Bernardin had developed. He had compiled an incredible amount of research on Elton's albums, songs, performances and early days in music. It was very impressive, and it was huge. But, honestly, it wasn't commercially publishable", explains Tom Stanton about the book. Stanton is the author of several acclaimed books and the 2008 winner of the Michigan Author of the Year Award. "Three of my previous four -- "Ty and The Babe," "The Road to Cooperstown" and "The Final Season" -- were published by Thomas Dunne Books at St. Martin's Press. The fourth, "Hank Aaron and the Home Run That Changed America," was with Morrow at HarperCollins" explains Stanton. "My background is in journalism" he continues: "I owned newspapers in suburban Detroit and had founded East End Lights, the Elton John magazine in 1990. With Claude's input, I rewrote, organized and packaged the manuscript, updating the information, adding research of my own and designing the pages -- eventually landing a publisher after numerous rejections. Had I never met Claude or seen his work, I might still have done an Elton John book at some point. But it would have been vastly different. To be clear: There is no doubt that the catalyst for "Rocket Man" was Claude's manuscript and detailed research" he recognizes.

Re-released by Praeger (August 30, 1996), this encyclopedia has 280 pages in length and four sections feature:

Elton A-Z - highliting explanations, details, and anecdotes related to aspects of his career and life, with entries on celebrity friends, important places, and a wide variety of topics.

Albums - presenting a chronological, behind-the-scenes look at Elton John's more than 35 albums up to and including 1995's Made in England.

Performances - listing his concert tours year by year and highlighting major performances such as John Lennon's final stage appearance in a 1974 show, a 1979 concert in Russia, and a little-publicized 1992 tribute.

Songs - listing alphabetically more than 500 songs recorded or written by Elton John.

Though the book received wide media attention and was available in stores, most of the copies were sold through East End Lights. "One of the highlights related to the book came when Elton's office requested numerous copies of it. Over the years, they asked me for more than two dozen" remembers Tom Stanton. "Amazingly, then-manager John Reid's associates told me that Elton's organization did not have any resource as through as "Rocket Man." The list of songs written or recorded by Elton was of particular interest. We were proud that in magazine photo shoots done of Elton, you could see the book on his shelf. As a side note, I was contacted by Yusuf Islam's (Cat Stevens') manager after the book was published. He was intrigued by the entry related to Cat Stevens and the scrapped recording of a duet by the Cat and Elton. He was trying to track it down."

Tom, what about the experience? "Overall, it was a wonderful experience. And though Claude and I haven't been in touch much over the years, I treasure our collaboration, remain proud of "Rocket Man" and appreciate his friendship. Anyone who has talked with Claude knows that he's an opinionated guy with a strong desire to tell it as he sees it. Though I don't always agree with him, I like that trait about Claude and I know him to be a genuinely good-hearted person".

"You make your own Destiny", Claude Bernardin

Watercolorist, Author, Poet, Teacher, Husband, Father, and Fan. That's Claude Bernardin. A complete profile. Someone who defines himself as "just a fan", an eltonite: "I have never looked at myself as an authority, just a fan", he told me, but, in my opinion, he's more than this. Co-written with Tom Stanton, Claude’s 1995 book, “Rocket Man : The Music Of Elton John” is one of the most recognized Pop Music books on the Musician according to Billboard Magazine, Amazon.com, and The Rock N’ Roll Hall Of Fame, in Cleveland, Ohio. Few people could talk about Elton John with authority, he could.

"Music was all around me, in every neighbours house. As I grew up, I read every book I could on the subject", he explains. "Rarely missed Rolling Stone Magazine, Billboard magazine I poured over the Charts and the news articles. I loved researching Rock Music". It wasn’t until Billboard magazine, Elton’s people and others started calling him a Rock Music Historian. "I love talking music, and listening to it" he argumeted, while adding: "My past, my history, my experiences have helped me with my views. I could tell you the worst song Elton John ever wrote but I still love it".

Being more concrete, I asked him about Elton's discography: "I demand you listen to "The Elton John" album, "Tumbleweed Connection", "Honky Chateau", "Madman", "Don't Shoot Me", "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road", "Captain Fantastic", "Blue Moves" and "Songs From The West Coast" at least twice before I will talk to you! : )". I thought of him to open the new season, dedicating a "Weekend Of" to him as my particular homage, and he kindly agree to do an interview with Jack Rabbit. And we found a very extraordinary person. Frankly talk, "your site will be a buzz in a few weeks" promised me. "God!". The blogsite always trying to be an open forum where people could express with freedom, like they feel. So the interview is promising. His knowledge about Elton has no question. But, what else we know about him?

Though Bernardin is primarily a shy person, he can be found lecturing to High School Art Students, as an Art Instructor in the Philadelphia Archdiocese School System, or rocking in the front rows at an Elton John Concert. He loves canvassing the hillsides and valleys of Montgomery and Berks county for inspiration.

Claude Bernardin is one of nine children of Doctor Charles W. Bernardin, Longtime professor of Villanova University, ( 1952 – 1986 ), and he was born in West Chester, Pennsylvania, September 21, 1957. He grew up and was raised in the country of nearby Malvern, Chester County, and spent many summers in the Mountains of Hillsgrove, Sullivan County, PA, fishing and swimming along the Loyalsock Creek. He attended Great Valley High School and learned his most serious profession there, studying as a young artist under Chester County Watercolorist Lawrence H. Kuzmin. He received his BFA in 1980, From Temple University and Tyler School Of Art, Philadelphia, Pa.

His first major Professional Painting exhibition in 1986, was in Gramercy Park, Manhattan, NY at the Salmagundi Art Club, upon invitation after receiving the President’s Award for his watercolor, “Work Bench”. Claude has had a successful painting career ever since. A detailed Artist who paints portraits, still lives and scenes of the American Landscape in, watercolor, Bernardin has become one of the more recognized Brandywine/Chester County School Realists. His work specifically is focused on Light and atmosphere, similar to the French Impressionist Claude Monet, whom Bernardin admits, along with Andrew Wyeth, is an influence. "I became an artist because of this man" he said about Wyeth, "hundreds of artists were made better human beings by observing nature, light, texture, emotions, and life around us. Our community was made better by this man, his vision, his father, his son, his family, his poetry and his love. His art is “LOVE”".

So, Bernardin began his career as a Watercolorist in 1971 and has been exhibiting his works for the last 38 years. He has shown in Hawaii, The Virgin Islands, The UK, France, and America. In 1988, he received a Senatorial Citation from Harrisburg, PA. for his : “Distinctively detailed watercolor depictions of the landscapes of Pennsylvania.” Bernardin’s Most popular Watercolor’s in Limited Edition Prints, are “Halloween Snow” , “Heading Home” and “Chester County Christmas.” Some of His most recent works will be featured in a book due out this September called “The 100 Artists of the Brandywine Valley” by Catherine Quillman.

His last Major Solo Exhibition was in Stone Harbor, at Stone Harbor Gallery in 1997. He has shown in over 500 Exhibitions, mostly local to the Tri-State Community he was born and raised in since 1971. He continues to paint and exhibit today. His works can be found in numerous public and private major collections: including - Vangard, Sir Elton John, and The Archdiocese of Philadelphia. He is also a watercolor History buff, and a recognized collector of Antique Art Pottery and Glassware, including Antique Bottles. He is well known for his sunset landscapes, his “Claude Skies” as his audience of collector’s refer to them.

He is currently working on a new series of watercolors for his first one man show in a few years, and several books: "a Horror Novel and a Collectors DVD Book on the History of American Art Pottery". He has most recently added, to creative writing, Poetry to his list of talents: "(I am) working on my first book of 200 Poems to be available for a larger market".

Bernardin has been featured in interviews and articles on Radio, Television, and Numerous Publications Locally, and Worldwide. Billboard Magazine, Rolling Stone Magazine, Goldmine Magazine, The Rock N Roll Hall of Fame, are but a few.

He has painted, demonstrated and lectured to numerous Local Art Organizations and Clubs. And has been a High School Art Instructor, on the High School level in the Philadelphian Archdiocese, for nearly 25 years. He teaches Painting, drawing, graphics, photography, film, Pop Culture, The History Of Pop Music, Art History and much more. He has been featured in Who’s Who In American Teachers over 6 times.

Finally, Claude is married, wife Kathleen, son, Andrew ( b. 1988 ). And Resides in Pottstown, Pennsylvania. He's a good conversionalist. Have I forgot anything, Claude? "I love to laugh. Love Dogs, Glazed Donuts, and the Three Stooges, and Bugs Bunny". Oh, and a favourite quotation?

The Eltonite's Day With... Roberto Mistico!!!!!

Hello eltonites. Well, this is the last day of the season. I will take a vacation, a free days, just to think what I'm gonna do next. I am thinking about new things, new sections, more articles, new interviews with the idols, and other things. Meanwhile, it will be an update of allsongslist with new entries. But I would not finish the season without inviting an eltonite, the true meaning of allsongslist. It had to be a new one, but someone so passionate to the artist, with a great knowledge of him, and specially, a good taste in music. I searched in Italy and his name came to mind: ladies and gentlemen, a true fan: Roberto Mistico!!!!

Hello Roberto, I am so pleased with your acceptation. I am glad to have you here and I am so honoured. First... Could you tell us, please, who are you and where are you from?

Hi, my name is Roberto Mistico, I'm 23 years old. I live in Rieti, a little city in the centre of Italy. I'm a computer repairman and I'm an CAD designer, My biggest passions are music, cinema, computers, video-games, sports and obviously... Elton!

Obviously ;-) Then, when did you became an Eltonite? Remember the first time you heard Elton's music and what moves you to buy his music?

I'm a “young” Eltonite. The first time that I heard Elton's music was in 2001, with the song “I want love”. This song became immediatly one of my favorite songs... I love the song and the video... But my true love for Elton's music began in 2007 when I saw the concert “elton60” at Madison Square Garden. I remember how I was enchanted by every single song, by his presence on stage and by his charisma. From witch day (15/08/2007) my eltonite's life started! I began to listen Elton's music every hours, to collect vinyls and CDs, go to see concerts...

Great!!! Which is your Elton's item that you really appreciate, for being hard to get or for the happiness you've got to have it?

Only if you can consider it an item, certainly, the photos that I did with Elton and David at 29th december 2009 in Venice. I fought for it and after many attempts I succeeded. It was fantastic... This was one of the best experience in my life...

For sure! What was it like seeing Elton for the first time and how many concerts have you been?

The first concert I saw was in Venice 2008 (a solo piano show, 09/07/2008). This was special for me, I was at third row and I also managed to tap Elton and took an autograph. The concert lasted less than normal and now I know that wasn't a memorable concert, however it will have always a special meaning for me. After Venice 2008, I saw Verona 2009 (band), Naples 2009 (solo), Milan 2009 (with Ray), all in the first rows. I already have the tickets for the italian 2010 shows in Milan, Rome (2) and Taormina. I'm looking forward to September. My favorite concert are Milano 2009, with Ray Cooper, absolutely fantastic!

A dream should be to see Elton 29 times in a month...

I would :p. If I didn't work and I if had enough money I'd follow him everywhere :D.

You met Elton, and I think more than once... how do you manage to get to him?

I met Elton three times. It takes a lot of lucky and determination, you must never give up, I have failed many other times, doing unnecessary trips, but when you finally met him you understand that it's all worth.

Would you help me to develop a set list for Elton? And you prefer the band, an orchestra, Ray Cooper, definitive, what type of show it should be?

I love the Elton's concerts with Ray, but my desire is to see a concert with orchestra. I never had the opportunity to see that live. The songs that I'd like to listen live are (some of them he doesn't play it so much): Hymn 2000, First Episode At Hienton, The Cage, Country Comfort, Goodbye, High Flying Bird, Roy Rogers, Harmony, Ticking, We All Fall in Love Sometimes, Island Girl, Chameleon, Where's The Shoorah, Take Me Back, Sartorial Eloquence, The Fox, Empty Garden, The North, I Just Can't Wait to be King, Man, Belfast, The Wasteland, Its Getting Dark In Here, Blues Never Fade Away.

A great list!! Which concert do you think now you should been there, for its rellevancy, for the particular show, for a funny costume he wore...?

The concerts that i'd wanted to see are “elton60” (for duration of the concert), “Live in Australia 1987 (for the costumes), “edinburg 76” (I love 70's!) and many others!

What do you think about the new project with Leon Russell? What could we expect about this album? It seems eltonites are so exciting now about this, not at first sight but when they saw the great cover art the album is. Could we be in front one of Elton’s hits of the century?

I'm waiting with great hope the new album. The only song we heard, never too old, is fantastic. Leon Russel and the other musicians that play in “the union” are very good and certainly will be a quality album. The cover is simple, suggests that there is only the music. And I think that the Eltonites want this: the music, the music of their idol, one of the greatest musician of all times.

Yes. Apart from music, which are your interests? What you like to do with your off time?

Apart from music (my big interest), I see films, I play with videogames... I'm a fan of technology. My other great passion is football, I'm a supporter of Juventus Turin F.C. I see almost every matches of the major european leagues. I also like basketball and tennis.

And finally, could you tell me your five favourite Elton's songs in running order, for my AllSongsList?

Mmh. It's very difficult... I try: Indian Sunset, I Want Love, Goodbye, Rocket Man, The Greatest Discovery...but there are many others...

I'd like to say to appreciate more Elton, he's one of the greatest composers of the history of music. Unfortunately in Italy Elton is not very appreciate, even by some fans.

Former band member John Jorgenson won a Grammy award for Best Country Instrumental for "Cluster Pluck", during the 51st Annual Grammy Awards held at the Staples Center on February 8, 2009 in Los Angeles.

March, 17

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution noticed that was in Elton's mind: "I've always loved Leon, and I think it's terrible that he's been almost forgotten about now," Elton added. "He's been such an influence on my playing and his music has been such a big part of my life. It will be a duets record. I'm a huge fan, and he's just such a great guy as well. I'm hoping it will all come together, maybe the beginning of next year. These days, I just want to focus on recording things that I really want to do, and I've always wanted to work with Leon."

April, 22

Elton performed his 241st and final "Red Piano" show in Las Vegas. The show made its debut in February 2004 at The Colosseum theater at Caesars Palace. After initially signing on for 75 shows, Elton's engagement was extended until 2009.

Gay Times asked a few celebrities to write a 16-year-old self letter. Among the letters was one from Sir Elton John offering the 16-year-old Reginald Kenneth Dwight some advice on life: "My advice to you is never to chase love – it will find you when you least expect it. Have fun, have lots of safe sex and enjoy your sexuality. Be proud of who you are and, as you get older and wiser, fight for gay rights" wrote Elton while he added: "Stay away from drugs, they’re a waste of time. Stand up for every human being’s rights. Be loving, kind and strong. Set an example" and finishing with a PS: "CHANGE YOUR NAME".

Keynote speech at the 2009 BIO International Convention in Atlanta. "HIV/AIDS is still winning" said to the audience. “There are long standing stereotypes and prejudices that inhibit our efforts to combat AIDS”.

Elton joined Brandi Carlile on "Carolina", a new song for her album, "Give Up the Ghost," which came out in the fall. "It was insane (work with Elton). It was like an out-of-body experience. He's been my hero since I was 11 years old. To get to work with Elton, it was just crazy. I don't even know how to describe it. He was amazing. He nailed the piano in one take. It took him an hour and a half to sing and play piano on this song, and then he stuck around and absolutely schooled me on new music for two hours and gave me a music lesson, basically. It was wonderful" declared Brandi to The Chronicle.

Elton dedicated his song "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me" to Michael Jackson in the middle of his annual "White Tie and Tiara Ball".

July, 2

Gay Icons, a photography exhibition held to celebrate the contribution of gay people to history and culture, opened at London's National Portrait Gallery. The icons, not all gay, included Nelson Mandela, Harvey Milk, Princess Diana, Ellen Degeneres, KD lang, Joe Orton, David Hockney and Will Young, and Elton helped in the selection: a black and white picture of Beatle John Lennon; he also named Graham Taylor, his former manager at Watford, as an inspirational figure.

"Any seeing you all makes me feel very happy, because this week has been the one of the saddest weeks in my life. Because my keyboard player in my band, Guy Babylon, tragically died last week. And it's one of the saddest things that ever happened to me. So I want to dedicate this show to him tonight - and all of you people. Sending our love to him whereever he is. God bless you, Guy. I love you so much!" said Elton to the Naples audience, Italy. Guy Babylon died of a heart attack while swimming in the pool. A charity fund had been set up in Guy's name.

Robert Key, one of the co-Founders of the Elton John Aids Foundation and its Director for 15 years, passed away having struggled against myelofibrosis for several years.

Lily Allen kidnapped an Elton lookalike in her video and hold him captive for her single "Who’d Have Known". The video continued in this bizarre vein with Lily imprisoning Elton in her home, tying him up and forcing him to make a telephone call in which he declares his love for her. ‘Elton’ finally makes a hasty escape after wriggling free from his bindings as Lily snoozes in front of the TV.

Elton John was on the mend after battling an E. coli bacterial infection and the flu that had forced him to cancel a series of concerts.

December, 11

Elton and David formally opened "Out The Closet" in London's Covent Garden. - I think the idea that the items we all buy and enjoy can help someone in dire need, particularly at this time of year, really strikes a chord" said Elton. 100% of proceeds from sales went to support the work on the Elton John AIDS Foundation.

Hello Eltonites!!! Today we have a very special guest on the Eltonite's Day. I could not forget her. Someone who wrote "Conversing ’bout those Yellow Jacket days / Laughing about how the two of us sound / When we sing at Elton’s concerts these days". She's so good in writing lyrics. Her favourite quotation: "If you ask how I am then I'll just say inspired". And she is inspired. "Too bad I always forget to respond that way when someone asks “How are you?”, she says. She began a blogsite about Elton, a good blogsite, quoting news, songs, everything. It was on my list since long time ago, I adore her so much, and I envy her knowledge about Elton. Thanks for coming, Kim, really a pleasure to have you. So... Could you tell us, please more, who are you and where are you from?

My name is Kimberlee Kemble and I'm from Boca Raton, Florida. I've been an Eltonite since almost the very beginning. I had all the albums, the singles, EJ posters plastered on my bedroom wall (my favorites were from "Don't Shoot Me I'm Only the Piano Player"), an EJ candle, the Time Magazine cover, Tiger Beat magazines with EJ on the cover, EJ shirts, an EJ necklace, you name it. If you've seen the video for Original Sin, that's me!

Great!!! When you became an Eltonite, then? Remember the first time you heard Elton’s music and what moves you to buy his music?

I became an Eltonite back in the mid-70s at the height of EJ mania. The first song I remember hearing on the radio was "Bennie and the Jets." He had several big hits, one right after the other, so the first album I bought was "Greatest Hits." Shortly after that I bought "Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy," and I was smitten - I listened to "Captain Fantastic" so much that I wore 2 copies of the album out!

People ask my why I'm still such a big fan. It's really hard for me to answer that, because there's not just one reason. His music is brilliant, yes, but it's not just that. It's so much more! It's the fact that he plays piano and so do I. That Bernie writes such poetic lyrics. That he uses orchestral arrangements. That you can't put him a box, he's so versatile. That he's still relevant after all these years. And that his music is so honest.

Yes, for sure. What was it like seeing Elton for the first time and how many concerts have you been? And, for you, which member of the band is (or was) irreplaceable? Miss someone, now?

The first time I saw Elton was in Atlanta while I was in college - he was performing just with Ray Cooper. I had nose bleed seats, but the concert was phenomenal. I've seen him about 20 times now, but that's not enough. I've traveled as far as New York City to see him, but mostly I've seen him in Florida (which, by the way, he needs to come visit us again soon)!

I've seen him with the "Elton John Band," I've seen him by himself, I've seen him with a choir and horn section, I've seen him with Billy Joel. I'm sentimental, so I'm really happy to see Davey and Nigel in concert - both of them are irreplaceable. I do miss Dee Murray and Guy Babylon, they were both such understated yet talented musicians.

What would you do if you meet Elton sometime? What would you talk about and which question would you like to ask him?

Well, I'd probably faint. And then when I composed myself, I would really just love to thank him for the amazing music he has brought to my life for so many years. I was thinking about it the other day, and his music has been a part of my life longer than most people (other than my parents and siblings). It's like having a friend for 30+ years that you can depend on for anything. So, I would just thank him. And then I would ask him if I could collaborate with him on a musical based on his songs (a la Mamma Mia and Abba or Movin' Out and Billy Joel). Why anyone hasn't done this already, I'm amazed. So it might as well be me! And I'd do it for free! :-)

Wow!!! That should be phenomenal!! Which is your Elton’s item that you really appreciate, for being hard to get or for the happiness you’ve got to have it?

My favorite Elton item isn't really an item, but a memory. I saw Elton in Atlanta once, when my friends had waited in line for 5 days to buy tickets for me (yes, you used to have to do that). I had front-row, left-of-center seats, right in front of his piano bench! About mid-way through the concert, Elton smiled at me. I know that sounds silly, but I know it was me that he smiled at. Really.

Well, you know that this is the 1991 week. What do you think about Elton’s Greatest Hits packages released? Do you prefer the All Time Hits... the Demos... the Unreleased Tracks... or all in one, like they did in the “To Be Continued” Compilation? And which songs should have been in a “To Be Continued” (Part Two), if sometimes were released?

All of them! I really do like the "To Be Continued" - I especially like hearing obscure or unreleased music. For example, I had never heard "Planes" until "Rare Masters" came out. What an amazing song!

"Original Sin" must be on "To Be Continued (Part Two)! Plus "The Bridge," "Blessed," "Answer in the Sky," "Birds", "They Call Her the Cat," "Paris,"...I could go on, but I think it's gonna be a long, long time...

What do you think about the new project with Leon Russell? What could we expect about this album? Any reference of Leon Russell? And about T-Bone Burnett as the producer?

I am so psyched! After "The Captain and the Kid," Elton said he wasn't going to do another album. I am expecting amazing things from this collaboration! To be honest, I don't know a whole lot about Leon Russell or T-Bone Burnett, but from what I've read about both, this album should be phenomenal. BTW, I do listen to other music, but I keep coming back to Elton. What can I say? :-)

Thank you, Miquel! I'm a wannabe writer, and I've always wanted to write a blog. Well, you're supposed to write about something you're passionate about, and I am certainly passionate about Elton. Mainly, the blog is just my thoughts and memories of his music, of seeing him in concert, and of any other random thoughts that come about because of Elton. It's a pretty new blog, so I don't have many followers, but I would so love it if other Eltonites would share their thoughts and memories on the blog, too.

Honestly, I was inspired to write the blog after connecting with AllSongsList. It has been so gratifying to know there are kindred spirits out there in the world who share the same passion and appreciation for Elton and his music.

Lately, I've been inspired to write my blog (smile). I have two teenage kids, so that keeps me pretty busy. My family says I work too much, so that doesn't leave a lot of spare time. I do love to watch American football (I'm a big Miami Dolphins fan), work out in the garden in the hot South Florida sun, and read. I also enjoy red wine. And of course, listening to a particular someone's music.

Oh, what’s a Kimoreena?

It's my homage to the song Amoreena (one of my favorites and possibly some of the sexiest lyrics Bernie ever wrote). Plus, as far as I know, there's no reference to "Kim" in any of Elton's songs (sigh), so I took the liberty of blending my name with Amoreena...voila! Kimoreena.

1991: Mr Elton John's Chronology

January, 27

"I am Elton, I am an alcoholic" told Elton to the presents while he was attending Alcoholic Anonymous meetings in West Hollywood, California. It was not until he formed a passionate relationship with a young man in 1990 that he began to identify the problem. His lover, too, was addicted to various substances, and suggested that they both sought help. At first Elton violently resisted the idea. But finally, on 30 July 1990, he agreed. For initial therapy, the pair were asked to make a list of each other's key faults. His lover's read: 'Elton does drugs, he's alcoholic, he's bulimic, he has terrible fits of rage.' Elton's began: 'He never puts his CDs away tidily.

April, 1

Elton joined a surprised Rod Stewart on stage at Wembley Stadium as an pril fool's joke by Rod's management. Wearing a black and gold frilly dress, stockings, high heels and a blonde wig, he sat on Rod's knees while he was singin' "You're In My Heart", and he served brandy from a silver tray. "My left leg has never been the same" joked a surprised Rod.

October, 14

A tribute album of cover versions of Elton and Bernie compositions, "Two Rooms", was released. The title refers to the song on Elton John's album 21 at 33, "Two Rooms at the End of the World", to the duo's unusual collaborative style, and is also that of a 1991 movie documenting their collaboration. The album gained an uneven reception, with Sinead O'Connor's interpretation of "Sacrifice" generally receiving the most praise. Kate Bush's reggae-inflected version of "Rocket Man" was released as the lead single and peaked at #12 in the UK and #7 in Australia. The second single was Oleta Adams' version of "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me", which peaked at #33 in the UK charts. Wilson Phillips' cover of "Daniel", while not released as a single, peaked at #7 in the US Adult Contemporary chart due to strong radio airplay.

Elton introduced a BBC TV tribute to Freddie Mercury who died of AIDS the previous night. Two days after, he attended the funeral at the West London cemetery in Kensal Green. "I will love you always." Elton's message was pinned to a massive wreath of pink roses shaped as a heart. The note added: "Thank you for being my friend." Elton gave John Deacon a hug and kissed Roger Taylor. Tears streamed down his cheeks as he walked forlornly to his green Bentley before being driven off.

The Eltonite's Day With... Vera Rio!!!!!

Hello Eltonites!!! We have here another guest on the eltonites' day section. A very wonderful person indeed. If you had the chance to talk with her, you could see how fun she is, how amazing time you have and how much she knows about Elton. Seen in facebook, participating in forums, she always had hte appropiated words to say. As many other eltonites, she was on my list of guests since a long time ago and finally the opportunity arrived. Plase, ladies and gentlemen, a big applause for... Vera Rioooooooo!!!!!!

With your permission, we'll gonna start. But first... Could you tell us, please, who are you and where are you from?

I am a nutritionist (born in March, 25 too!) and I work in a children's hospital in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil).

Ok! When did you became an Eltonite? Remember the first time you heard Elton's music and what moves you to buy his music?

Actually, there are three "meetings" :

The first Elton's song I heard on the radio was "Crocodile Rock", in 1972. I immediately liked that guy with higher vocal ranges, almost a countertenor! (Hey, but I kept love when his voice changed and became almost a "baritone" = "Blue Eyes" it's beautiful!) Singing those funny lyrics embedded in a catchy beat (in the best 50's style);

The second meeting was with "Skyline Pigeon" in the same year (I think) and through the soundtrack of a romantic soap opera from TV that was very successful in Brazil. In that soundtrack it was also "Music and Me" with Michael Jackson. OMG!! I was a teenager(very romantic too) in those times and you can imagine the effect that all this had on me! hehehe ...). I could not imagine that this song became the most beloved song of the Brazilians Elton's fans at all the times!

The third meeting (and that definitely sealed my story as a "eltonite") was through a video of "The Ballad of Danny Bailey" on TV in 1974. Those brilliant arrangements by Del Newman, the "magnificent" piano, the story told through the masterful lyrics by the poet Bernie Taupin... well... It was born one more eltonite in the world (and for all my life!). There began a new phase in my life: "learning English through Elton's songs"; I had to understand what he sang translating the lyrics (poems) by Bernie, to show them to my friends (who were also becoming "eltonites"), sing for my mother (translating for her the lyrics of "Skyline Pigeon", that she liked so much... yes,my Mom also was becoming a "eltonite"!!). She loved the relaxed and irreverent style of that English singer, his crazy clothes, the piano and the beautiful songs.

All this special mix (voice, piano, Elton's charisma) together with the lyrics from Bernie Taupin made me go in search of the latest releases of his albums. I became a friend of the sellers in a shop where I spent ALL THE MONEY that I saved not buying my lunch at school...!!

The first album I bought was "Empty Sky." I heard it several times when I came home, to learn all the words!

Hahahaha Wow!!! Nice stories to listen, Vera! And what was it like seeing Elton for the first time and how many concerts have you been? And, for you, which member of the band is (or was) irreplaceable? Miss someone, now?

I only had the chance to see just ONE Elton's concert until today (unfortunately)... , but ... wowwww! It was "The SHOW " of my life. On January 19, 2009, in my city and in a place near my house I realized my great dream. It was over 2 months of anxiety (since the day I bought the ticket), the five hours that I spent waiting to enter in the "Apotheosis Square" and to stay very close to the stage in front of the "legendary" piano, seeing Sir Elton pointing the finger at us each camera's flash ... OMG ... it was a magical night, ... We were nearly 30,000 people who could feel the energy in the air.

To sing "Skyline Pigeon" (that he kindly included in the set list knowing our passion for this song), only with Elton, the piano and the crowd, it brought me to tears: "Yes, Mom, I sang this for you!" (she died in 2002).

To me, a member of the band that is irreplaceable is the drummer Nigel Olsson (I was devastated when he left the band in 1975). Thanks God, he's back! I miss so much Dee Murray and Guy Babylon (forever in our hearts and minds).
　
... For always, yes! Which concert do you think now you should been there, for its rellevancy, for the particular show, for a funny costume he wore...?

I would have been at the presentation of the "Troubador" to witness the beginning of "everything"! At Wembley (1984) with Elton and the Band in great shape (they all seem having a great time) and with a setlist that I love! I would also have been in the special and closed presentation that he made here in Brazil (Sala Sao Paulo) to a lucky few, also in January of the last year.

What would you do if you meet Elton sometime? What would you talk about and which question would you like to ask him?

After a few seconds of a "blackout" in my neurons (yes, "seconds", I would have to be faster than his security team! hehehe...), heart beating a mile in a minute, I would bow to greet Sir Elton and say: "Thank you for being so present in my days, your songs are the soundtrack of my life. God bless you." And if dear Elton was still close to me (hehehe...) I would ask what he thought about the idea of some relaxing here in Brazil. He work so hard and deserves to rest. Here in Brazil there's so beautiful beaches to enjoy it with David!

Great!!! What is like being an eltonite in your country? Which are the brazilians preferences in music and which is Elton's place there?

Sometimes I wondered if we were a lot of fans here in Brazil but the frequency that some radio stations always played the Elton's songs (here in my town) made me think there was a "resistance", Elton's fans too quiet, almost hidden, but which would suffice a special event (like the concert last year) to "raise" thousands and thousands of fans.

After the show we get in touch with other fans and realized we were just a "little bit sleepers." All it took was a show to reawaken our passion with all strength! OMG, if Sir Elton would come to Brazil more many times, I'm sure your CD's and DVD's were back in print and sell more! Only two nights in the Summer of 2009 were sufficient to Elton appear in the most important network TV in Brazil (and maybe South America). The first show in Sao Paulo was broadcast to all the country. His songs were played so much on the radio and he was the subject of newspapers and magazines.

I know 3 big fan clubs here (two of them are on Fb.) In Brazil the songs we could hear more often are: Skyline Pigeon (of course), Your Song, Rocket Man, Goodbye Yellow Brickroad, Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me, I'm Still Standing, Daniel, Sad Songs, Sacrifice, I Want Love (these are the ones that I hear on the radio, Brazil it's a very big country and each region may have different preferences).

It is delightful to walk into a shop, supermarket, beauty salon... and suddenly start playing a Elton's song in the sound system. In this hours I just smile quietly and think: "mission accomplished" (after the concerts of 2009 we began to ask for Elton's songs on the radio, and they play!!)

Love it!!! What do you think about the new project with Leon Russell? What could we expect about this album? And about T-Bone Burnett as the producer?

Leon Russell is an eclectic musician, moves through several musical genres with so much success (and as well Elton, Leon is a Aryan!). T-Bone Burnnett is another "sacred monster"! Producer of success, dedicated musician with several award nominations and winner of many awards too. We only can expect a fantastic album, of course! Imagine! Elton's talent and charisma flanked by these two great musicians, that will produce incredible music with the best quality.. I just can’t wait for the release!

Which is your Elton's item that you really appreciate, for being hard to get or for the happiness you've got to have it?

Huuummmm .... would be so many things ... but as I only have just purchased items at the site of the Official Fan Club of Elton (t-shirt, cap) I would be happy with an autographed pic, with Elton and I (a request "very easy" to obtain, isn't it???!!! hahaha!!). Ah! I almost forgot! ONE earring (don’t need to be a PAIR of earrings, ok?)

1987: Sir Horace Pussy's Chronology

January, 1

Bernie Taupin released the RCA album "Tribe", named displaying his affinity for the Native American culture. It was co-wrotten by Martin Page, who also collaborated "We Built This City" with Bernie for Starship. The songs on the album featured "Corrugated Iron", dedicated to Nelson Mandela, he duetted with Martha Davis on "She Sends Shivers, and it was also nice to hear Elton John's voice on "Citizen Jane" and "Billy Fury."

January, 5

Elton John underwent surgery to remove nodules from his vocal chords and forced to cancel all 1987 performances including a U.S. tour.

April, 5

Elton was the special guest at the International AIDS Benefit Concert at Wembley Arena, London, and performed "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow" and "I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues". It was the first live show after his operation.

June, 6

Elton was part of the Prince's Trust concert. He was invited along to an extended jam session – the band featuring the likes of Mark King on bass, both Ringo Starr and Phil Collins on drums, Elton on piano, and both George Harrison and Jeff Lynne on guitar.

November

Elton appeared on the NBC series Totally Minnie performing a track. The film featured an original music video with Minnie Mouse, in new animation, integrated into live action footage with Elton John singing "Don't Go Breaking My Heart". It was the first film to feature Minnie Mouse in the lead role. The animation for "Totally Minnie" was provided by Filmfair, a British company who had provided animation for the television series "Huxley Pig", "Junglies" and "Nellie the Elephant".

Elton John joined George Harrison and Ringo Starr as they shot a promotional video for "When We Was Fab", from George's Cloud Nine album.
